This is the privacy policy for kristenvannest.com, a website operated by Van Nest Media Inc. (“I”, “me”, “my”). It explains what information I collect, why I collect it, and what you can do about it. I have tried to write it in plain English rather than legalese.

Information you give me. If you sign up for my newsletter (the Serial Chillers Club), request a free book or sample chapters, buy a book directly, or contact me through a form, I collect the email address you provide, and any other information you choose to enter, such as your name.

Information collected automatically. When you visit this site, certain information is collected automatically by the tools listed below. This may include your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages you view, how long you stay, the site you came from, and general location inferred from your IP address (typically at the city or country level).

Cookies and tracking technologies

This site uses cookies, web beacons, pixels and similar storage technologies. Some are necessary for the site to function; others help me understand how the site is used and measure whether my advertising works.

Third parties, including Meta Platforms, Inc. and Google, may use cookies, web beacons and other storage technologies to collect or receive information from this website and elsewhere on the internet, and use that information to provide measurement services and target ads.

Specifically, this site uses:

• Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager — to measure traffic and understand which pages people read. Google’s practices are described in the Google Privacy Policy.
• Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram) — to measure the performance of my ads and to show ads to people who have visited this site. Meta’s practices are described in the Meta Privacy Policy.

• BookFunnel — used to deliver free books and samples to readers. See the BookFunnel Privacy Policy.
• WordPress.com / Automattic — my website host, which keeps standard server logs and provides site statistics. See the Automattic Privacy Policy.
• Stripe — processes payments if you buy a book directly. I never see or store your full card details. See the Stripe Privacy Policy.

How to opt out of advertising cookies

You can opt out of interest-based advertising in several ways:

• Adjust your Meta ad preferences.
• Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
• Use the industry opt-out pages at the Digital Advertising Alliance or the Network Advertising Initiative.
• Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Note that some parts of the site may not work properly if you do.

How I use your information

I use the information I collect to send you the newsletter and books you asked for, to deliver purchases, to understand which of my writing people actually read, to measure and improve my advertising, and to respond when you contact me.

What I do not do

I do not sell your personal information. I do not rent or trade my email list. I do not share your email address with other authors or with advertisers.

Your choices and rights

Every email I send contains an unsubscribe link, and it works immediately. You can also email me at vannestmediainc@gmail.com and ask me to show you what data I hold about you, correct it, or delete it entirely, and I will do so.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the GDPR including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, and the right to object to processing. If you are in California, you have rights under the CCPA including the right to know and the right to delete. To exercise any of these rights, email me at the address above.

Data retention

I keep your email address for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, MailerLite retains a record of the unsubscribe so that you are not contacted again. You can ask for full deletion at any time.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

If I change this policy, I will update the date at the top of the page.
